			<title>MEXICO-ELECTIONS-MIDTERM-NULL VOTE</title>
			<link>http://discuss.flickrfan.org/2009/07/03/0879453.html</link>
<description>Dozens of banners fill the streets of Mexico City on July 3, 2009 just two days before the midterm elections in Mexico. The high political apathy reflects substantial skepticism both of the political elites here and the ability of politicians to provide security -- both physical and economic -- to the 47 percent of the 103-million strong population that subsist in poverty. Mexico geared Friday for weekend polls to seat 500 lawmakers and mayors across the country in the midst of brutal drug-fuelled violence, a pandemic flu outbreak and the worst economic downturn in 15 years. <link>http://discuss.flickrfan.org/2009/07/03/0879351.html</link>
<description>Undated photo supplied by Spanish police on July 3, 2009, shows climbing and other material, police say was to be sent by a remote-control four-metre-long zeppelin into the prison in Las Palmas to free an Italian drug trafficker. Accomplices planned to send &quot;Giulio B&quot;, 51, the material which would allow him to climb to the highest point in the prison to access a spot with no surveillance, and to then absail down the prison walls. &quot;Giulio B&quot; was serving time for carrying 200kg of cocaine in a seaplane from Mauritania to Spain. The three accomplices were arrested, including one who was watching with binoculars, camped 600 metres from the prison in a camouflage tent surrounded with movement sensors.</description>

<description>Afghan men observe a US Marine of 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade patrol Garmsir district in Afghanistan&apos;s Helmand province on July 3, 2009. US Marines launched a major offensive into the Taliban heartlands of southern Afghanistan before dawn July 2 as President Barack Obama&apos;s new war plan swung into action. With dozens of aircraft ferrying out troops from various bases, the assault aimed to insert forces into insurgent strongholds in Helmand province in what officers said was the biggest offensive airlift by the Marines since Vietnam. Operation Khanjar (Strike of the Sword), involving nearly 4,000 US forces as well as 650 Afghan police and soldiers, would bring security to the Helmand River valley ahead of presidential elections on August 20, commanders said.
